This site is made possible in part by grants from the New York State Office for Aging and the New York Community Trust. We are also grateful to Western New York Law Center for hosting the site.  We are grateful to Selfhelp Community Services, which housed the Evelyn Frank Legal Resources Program until April 1, 2013, and which originally launched this website.

This site is the product of the work of a group of legal services attorneys and paralegals who work in the field of health and public benefits law in New York state. The organizations who author and maintain this site are:

New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)

The Evelyn Frank Legal Resources Program (EFLRP) was founded by Selfhelp Community Services in the 1990's, and became a full-time legal services program in 2002.  In April 2013, EFLRP moved from Selfhelp to NYLAG with its entire staff.  At NYLAG, it will continue serving as a legal resource for older persons and people with disabilities, and for the advocates who assist them. EFLRP helps them as they navigate the complex systems that provide access to health care and long-term care. EFLRP focuses on the needs of low-income individuals and access to Medicaid, Medicare, Medicare Part D, EPIC, and Medicare Savings Programs.

Empire Justice Center

Empire Justice is a statewide, multi-issue, multi-strategy public interest law firm focused on changing the “systems” within which poor and low income families live. With a focus on poverty law, Empire Justice undertakes research and training, acts as an informational clearinghouse, and provides litigation backup to local legal services programs and community based organizations. As an advocacy organization, we engage in legislative and administrative advocacy on behalf of those impacted by poverty and discrimination. As a non-profit law firm, we provide legal assistance to those in need and undertake impact litigation in order to protect and defend the rights of disenfranchised New Yorkers.

The Legal Aid Society

The Legal Aid Society is the nation's oldest and largest provider of legal services to the indigent. Founded in 1876, the Society provides a full range of civil legal services as well as criminal defense work, and juvenile rights representation in Family Court. Our core service is to provide free legal assistance to New Yorkers who live at or below the poverty level and cannot afford to hire a lawyer when confronted with a legal problem.
